Just Landed: The Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition

Watches & Wonders 2023 is fully underway and many luxury watch brands are taking this time to reveal some of their finest innovations this year, including Oris who has unveiled a ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch. The Muppet character’s instantly recognisable green shade is used for the dial of this new watch, based heavily on the popular Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 watch.

"Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" The lovable green frog who was first seen on TV in 1955 is just as popular today and is the inspiration behind this new Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 watch. The Swiss watchmaker has released this quirky addition to the popular ProPilot watch collection to communicate its commitment to making timekeeping fun and exciting. Putting a smile on the faces of many avid Oris watch fans, the new Oris ProPilot X Calibre Kermit Edition watch is sure to hop onto the wrists of anyone that shares a love for the famous Muppet character and the brand’s unwavering dedication to precision timekeeping.

The Big Crown ProPilot watch collection is a range of elegant, functional pilot’s watches that promise exceptional value for money. Some of the models from the collection are powered by in-house movements, whilst others feature altimeter scales and water-resistant capabilities of 100 meters. There are also limited editions available from the range and, of course, the ProPilot X Calibre 400 watch, released in several colours including salmon, deep blue and anthracite shades. The Calibre 400, which powers away inside these watches is Oris’ latest generation of high-performance automatics and has been conceived entirely in-house by masters at the Swiss manufacturer’s facilities, nestled in the heart of Holstein. Two key features of the Calibre 400 are its superior magnetic-resistant components and an impressive five-day power reserve. When it comes to an Oris Big Crown ProPilot watch, there is much more to its design than meets the eye. Like its ancestors, the models feature an oversized crown at 3 o’clock that is easy to grip whilst wearing thick pilot’s gloves and the design of the bezel is reminiscent of the blades on an aircraft.

The new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch, released at Watches & Wonders 2023 is a simple time and date model but with a twist. The date feature at 6 o’clock displays a Kermit emoji within its window on the first day of every month. Designed to put a smile on the face of the wearer, Oris’ role, just like Kermit the Frog’s, is to entertain, adding a new dimension to timekeeping with this additional quirky feature. This design element is what Oris refers to as “Kermit Day” and is simply intended to make someone’s day at the start of each month.

Oris’ Ken Laurent, explains a little more about the message behind the new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition; Let me ask you this: what is a mechanical watch for? We talk a lot about functions in a literal sense, but really, the purpose of an Oris watch is to make people smile. That’s it. And with the ProPilot X Kermit Edition, there’s nothing else to it. Ok, yes, it’s powered by a brilliant movement and the case design is spectacular, but the function of this watch is really simple: to bring joy.”

When asked about what drew Oris to the Kermit the Frog character, Laurent replied; “We don’t want ambassadors where we take their emotion and put it on top of ours. We always want someone who becomes part of the Oris family. Kermit is that. We have a lot in common. He’s the “everyfrog”, like the everyman. He’s down to earth. I mean, he comes from a swamp. And he’s never trying to be the centrepiece, but he always has an important role to play. The main goal of The Muppets is to entertain people, to have fun, to make people laugh and have a good time. At the same time they’re always trying to solve something, but in a fun way. Snap!”

Everything you need to know about the new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch

The multi-piece case of the new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch is crafted from lightweight titanium with a mixture of both satin-brushed and polished finishes. The case is integrated with 100-meter water resistance and features a domed piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that has been treated with anti-reflective technology to assist you, as the wearer, with a clear view into the dial. The model measures a total diameter of 39mm.

Against the iconic Kermit-green dial of this new Oris ProPilot watch are a set of central hour and minute hands that have been treated with a generous helping of Super-LumiNova. To match this effect in the dark, the hour markers have also been treated with this same material. The back of the case is screwed-in and features a sapphire crystal exhibition window to observe the beautifully performing Calibre 400 whilst in motion. This automatic movement promises an accuracy of -3/+5 seconds a day and provides a 120-hour power reserve once fully wound.

The new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch features a date window at 6 o’clock that reveals a Kermit emoji at the turn of each month. The date aperture sits opposite the Oris lettering at 12 o’clock where a double stick marker represents the 12 o’clock location. The entire dial, protected from scratching, denting, moisture, heat and light damage by its domed sapphire shield, is framed by a knurled bezel. A screw-in crown with a protection guard resides at 3 o’clock on the case and the model is fitted on a matching polished and satin-brushed titanium three-link bracelet with a titanium folding clasp and a patented Oris “LIFT” system.
