Reviewing the Seiko Prospex Tropical Lagoon Hybrid Diver’s SNJ039P1 Watch

The new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Hybrid Diver’s SNJ039P1 watch takes the form of the popular “Tuna” watch AKA the “Arnie” and is inspired by the life and serenity of a blue lagoon with its beautiful emerald green and marine blue colourway.

The architecture of the new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” watch takes the form of the world-first “Hybrid divers” watch manufactured by Seiko in the year 1982 with a digital and analogue display. Known as the Prospex “Arnie”, the Seiko Hybrid Diver’s watch was made famous on the wrist of the A-list actor when he wore it during the “Commando” film but it is also affectionately named the “Tuna” since its bold case and large diameter took a similar shape to a tuna tin.

The watch was re-imagined a few years ago with three new Prospex releases; the reference SNJ025 with a traditional stainless steel case and a black bezel that looked very true to the original, the reference SNJ027 with a stainless steel case and a Pepsi bezel (also a PADI special edition), and the reference SNJ028 with a DLC-coated case that was only available online. Now another new Seiko Prospex watch joins the line for 2023 named the “Tropical Lagoon” reference SNJ039P1. It comes with an impressive water resistance rating, a solar-powered quartz movement and an entrancing emerald-green marine-blue colour scheme that pays homage to the colours of the topical lagoon and its inhabitants.

Why is the Seiko Prospex watch so collectable?

The Seiko Prospex collection is a line of sports watches for pros. With top models offering a 1000-meter water-resistant rating and high-tech Spring Drive technology – the Seiko watches in this series are perfectly tailored for extreme conditions and fearless adventure-seekers. Whether you intend to endure a tough and challenging expedition with a Seiko Prospex watch attached to your wrist or not, however, these models are collected far and wide for their bold style and robust design. They’re versatile, instantly recognisable on the wrist, and tough. The name of the collection combines the words “professional” and “specifications” together, highlighting the key qualities of the collection. The dive watches have acquired their own nicknames over time such as the “Tuna” the “Turtle”, the “Sumo” and the “Samurai”. Delivering professional-level water resistance at an affordable price, it’s clear to see how the Seiko Prospex watch collection has gone from strength to strength over the years.

The new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Hybrid Diver’s SNJ039P1 watch has been released alongside a sibling – the Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Turtle watch SRPJ35K1, which you can check out in more detail here. It takes its name from its case shape, which resembles a turtle and its curved comfortable shell and belongs to yet another covetable and highly collectable sub-series of wristwatches belonging to the Prospex range.

The new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Hybrid Diver’s SNJ039P1

The new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Hybrid Diver’s SNJ039P1 watch measures an imposing diameter of 47.5mm thus will appeal to those with large wrists that can handle this beefy number. Its case is a mix of stainless steel and plastic, with a black and steel unidirectional rotating bezel that can be used for measuring elapsed time underwater. The bezel connects to a Hardlex crystal front that protects the surface of the dial from scratching and moisture damage. The first fifteen minutes of dive time on this rotating bezel are mapped out in a stunning emerald green colour to symbolise the inhabitants and vegetation that thrive within a tropical lagoon. In addition to this, the remainder of the bezel is represented in a marine blue colour.

The emerald green tones on the bezel of this new Seiko Prospex “Tropical Lagoon” Special Edition Hybrid Diver’s watch are reflected in the arrow-tipped minute hand of the dial, which has been treated with Lumibrite material, as has the surface of the hour hand and the minute markers of the 60-minute scale on the bezel. The black dial also features a day and date features at 3 o’clock, whilst the Lumibrite hour markers are presented in a mix of trapezoid and circular shapes. Completing the dial is the Seiko logo at 12 o’clock, surrounded by a legible minute marker with white indexes.

This new Seiko Prospex watch for 2023 is powered by a solar quartz movement named the Calibre H851, which promises an accuracy of ±15 seconds per month (±1 second per day). The vibrant lagoon-inspired dive watch is completed on a robust stainless steel bracelet with polished and brushed elements to its design. It secures comfortably to the wrist with a three-fold clasp with a secure lock.
